Summary
CRX Starter is a free Chrome extension that installs an extension package you choose (a .crx or .zip file, or a download link) and shows you what that package will be able to access before it runs. crxstarter.com is its website. This policy covers what the extension and the website store and send. We collect as little as we can, we never see the packages you install, and we don't sell data.
What stays on your device
The package you install, its name, icon, version and settings, where it came from, and the install and update state are stored in Chrome's extension storage on your device. They are not uploaded to us. When you install from a link, CRX Starter downloads the package directly from that link; we don't proxy or keep a copy.
What the extension sends to us
CRX Starter has no account and no sign-in. It does not ask for your name, email address or any other contact details.
- An anonymous install code. CRX Starter creates a random code when it is installed and exchanges it for a session token with our server (platform.crxstarter.com). The same code is shared with crxstarter.com so the site recognizes the same installation for one-click installs and support. Our server answers with an anonymous user ID; a short form of it is shown as your “Feedback ID” and is included when you choose to email us. Neither is linked to your name or contact details.
- Product usage events. Whether CRX Starter was opened, once-a-day activity, whether an install succeeded or why it failed (for example “invalid package”), whether the installed package's popup opened, and whether you cancelled on the check page. These events do not include the package's name, the download link, or the pages you visit.
- Recommendation interactions. CRX Starter may show a short list of our other tools. When you see, click or close one, we record that action with your time zone and local time.
These reports do not include your IP address or location fields.
Code CRX Starter runs
All of CRX Starter's own code ships inside the extension. It does not download scripts from our servers or anywhere else to change how CRX Starter itself behaves. The only other extension code it runs is the package you pick — a file from your device or a download link you open — and only after you've seen what it asks for and clicked “Allow and install”. You can remove it at any time. Our server only returns plain data: a session token, a few settings, and the text, image and link of the optional list of our other tools.
Packages you install
CRX Starter does not collect data from the packages you install or from the websites they work on. Those packages run with the permissions you approve on the check page and in Chrome's prompt, and they may have their own data practices. Install only packages you trust.
Websites the extension opens
On install, CRX Starter opens crxstarter.com. On uninstall, it opens our feedback page with the anonymous install code so your feedback can be matched.
Feedback
If you use the feedback page, we receive what you write, your email address (if you give one), any screenshots or videos you attach, and the extension version, browser and language. It's stored on our own server and used only to answer you and improve the product.
Cookies on crxstarter.com
crxstarter.com sets two cookies, both first-party:
- A first-visit cookie that remembers how you found the site (campaign tags and the referring domain), so we can tell which pages lead to installs.
- When CRX Starter is installed, a cookie that holds the same anonymous install code the extension uses, so the feedback page and the install link can recognize you without an account. Scripts on the page can't read it.
We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't currently run third-party analytics on the site.
How we use the data
To keep CRX Starter working, understand where installs fail, count how often our tool list is seen and used, and answer support requests. We do not sell your data, do not use it for advertising profiles, and do not share it with third parties except service providers that host our servers.
What we never collect
Your browsing history, the contents of the pages you visit, the packages you install, passwords, or payment information.
Keeping and deleting data
Removing a package in CRX Starter deletes that package's files and data from your device. Uninstalling CRX Starter removes everything it stored on your device. Feedback is kept until it's resolved and then for up to 12 months. To ask us to delete server-side records tied to your Feedback ID, email support@crxstarter.com with that ID.
Children
CRX Starter is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above.
